EXP returned from an amazing trip to the Southwest with a family of four visiting the National Parks of the Southwest. The trip started in Zion National Park with a night at Zion Ranch and enjoying the herd of bison as they walked past the lodge.
The following morning to avoid the heat their EXP Journeys guide took them north to Bryce Canyon National Park to see the Hoo Doos and hike down into the amphitheater. The hike offers close up views of the formations and more shade than the rim walk during the summer months. After the hike the guide took them out to Bryan Head for an introduction to rock climbing and an opportunity to see Cedar Breaks.
Continuing from Zion National Park to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon the family had the opportunity to camp in a private luxury tent, set up by American Safari Camp, in the forest surrounded by Aspen Trees and Ponderosa Pines. The high elevation of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is the perfect setting for a summer camp. Along the way their EXP guide stopped at the BLM field office in Kanab to show the workings and amazing finds of the paleontology department. Highlighting all the species of the Grand Staircase the paleontologist, Katija, shared the latest bones and fossil finds and explained the rich collection of life that once roamed this area millions and millions of years ago.
The morning the family left camp everyone woke up in the dark and drove 25 minutes out to Bright Angel Point for a sunrise walk. The sun came up and over the rim illuminating the south rim and the Coconino Sand Stone formation. As the sun came up higher in the sky the Red Wall Limestone became vibrant and the colors of the Grand Canyon National Park came alive.
The family continued from the North Rim of the Grand Canyon to Lake Powell. With almost as much coastline as the entire west coast of the United States there are plenty of spaces to sneak away to on Lake Powell making you feel as though you are the only one there. With kayaking, paddle boarding, wake surfing, tubing and cliff jumping the final day of the itinerary was certainly one of the highlights.
The family finished in style with a night at the beautiful Amangiri Resort and Spa.
